Experienced mountain bike trail construction company Conservefor were appointed by Conwy County Borough Council and Menter Bro Machno, a non for profit organisation run by volunteers to construct two new sections of red grade descent through a Natural Resources Wales forestry site to replace the current descents along forest roads adding a further 1.3 kilometres to the trail centre.

Conservefor, an experienced mountain bike trail construction company deployed a team of specialist trail builders. Our experienced mountain bike trail construction team are experts on challenging terrain and confined work areas. Our team used bespoke 3, 5 and 7 tonne excavators with tilt rotate attachments, 9 tonne wheeled dumpers and 3 tonne tracked dumpers.

The project included the following work:

  • Construction of 1.3 kilometres of red grade MTB trail
  • Installation of new fencing and field gates
  • Installation of 7 metre wooden bridge

Working to the trail designs provided by Menter Bro Machno. Conservefor appointed ALFA tree services to fell all trees along the planned route of the trail. Once this task was completed we used our 7 tonne excavator to clear the route of felled trees. Next or mountain bike trail construction team removed any tree stumps and bench cut the route across steep traverses.

Our highly experienced plant operators then set to work with our bespoke 3 tonne dumper specially adapted for use on forestry sites to transport aggregate along the route of the trail. Next, our trail builders set to work building oversized features such as berms rollers drop offs as well as utilising natural features such as rock faces to create technical traverses. The experienced mountain bike trail construction team then used a 20 tonne excavator to build two huge sweeping berms into the hillside. These huge berms at the end of the trail would leave a lasting memory with all riders.

In addition to these works our qualified Joiner with years of experience in Joinery and plant operating installed a 7 metre wooden bridge over a stream crossing the route of the trail and installed new post and rail fencing and field gates where the trail crossed farm access roads.

This project involved working in a forestry environment on steep and unstable terrain with confined working areas. Our highly trained trail building team’s experience of working under these conditions was essential to ensuring the safe running of the project whilst still delivering the high standard of work expected by our client.

To maintain this standard all our staff have undertaken the Forestry Machine Operators Competency qualification. This evidences the additional knowledge and experience required when operating machinery in such a hazardous environment. Our team has also under taken additional first aid training and completed a forestry first aid at work qualification which is specially tailored for employees working in a forestry Environment.

All this combined has led to the construction of a hard wearing, technical descent through challenging terrain whilst delivering a fast, flowing yet safe ride.
